Last Saturday our 3rd annual 16u Fall World Series got underway in Franklin, Texas. Three teams competed head to head for a shot at the FWS championship game to be played on November 7th.
The first game featured a pair of starting pitchers who were poised to keep the opposing offenses in check. On the mound for the Zambonis was Jerry Murillo, a hard throwing right hander out of St. Pius X high school. Taking the ball for Cajun Gree Gree was Oak Ridge High School's Luken Baker, a team USA member from last summer. Utilizing small ball tactics and capitalizing on a Gree Gree error, the Zambonis were able to push a run across in the top of the 2nd inning. After three innings of play, the Zambonis led 1-0. Gree Gree's Max Page led an offensive push in the later innings with 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Final Score: Cajun Gree Gree 5, Zambonis 2.
In the second game of the day, A Dozen Dimes manufactured a run in the first inning when Sean Arnold stole second after a bunt single and then stole 3rd with one out. Jeramy Johnson drove Arnold home with a ground out to second base. Johnson and Michael Francis pitched well for the Dimes holding the Gree Gree offense to 2 runs through five innings however, Gree Gree's Elijah Adams and MacGregor Hines were one run better through four and 1/3 innings of play. In the bottom of the 5th inning, with one runner on base, Sean Arnold tripled to right center to tie the game. In the bottom of the 6th, the Dimes pushed three more runs across to take a 5-2 lead. Jake Georgiades closed it out for the Dimes in the top of the 7th. Final Score: A Dozen Dimes 5, Cajun Gree Gree 2.
In the third and final game of the day, Cody Staab led off with a single to left and The Zambonis managed to load the bases in the top of the first inning. Brandon Letendre stepped up to the plate and drove the first pitch over center fielder Ryan Johnson's head to score all three runners. That's all the run support Zamboni pitchers Collin Cameron and Baylor Rowlett would need. Final Score: Zambonis 7, A Dozen Dimes 0.
